College Football Countdown Day 49: Georgia

Happy Friday! Today we go between the hedges and look at the Georgia Bulldogs.

School: University of Georgia

Mascot: Bulldogs

Fight Song: Glory

Head Coach: Kirby Smart (8-5)

Stadium: Sanford Stadium (Capacity: 92,746)

Best Place to Eat on Campus:

Pulaski Heights BBQ looks like a fine place.  It is also BYOB, because apparently it is in a dry area. You also can buy their sauce by the gallon.

Greatest Moment in Program History:

This isn't a mystery or a difficult decision.  In 1980, All World running back Hershel Walker led Georgia to an undefeated season. They defeated 7th ranked Notre Dame to win the school's first and only National Title.

Current State of the Program:

I get why Georgia fired Mark Richt. I also get why it seemed silly. On one hand you had a coach who was averaging nearly ten wins a year over fifteen years.  On the other hand, you had a stationary program who seemed stuck at being good but never quite good enough. Every year Georgia would get thumped by teams that were better than them, lose one game they shouldn't, and cruise through the rest of the year.  The program, on the field, in the facilities arms race, and in national perception, was stuck.

Kirby Smart has the hands on energy of a first time head coach whose first job is a great one. Smart walked into a program that was in good shape, but still could be easily improved. The first year was a transitional year, and squeezing eight wins out of a culture change year is an achievement in itself.  Georgia is adding a new practice facility and upgrading the locker rooms. Richt never had an issue recruiting and Smart shouldn't either.  It's too early to tell if Georgia will make the leap under Smart to consistently battle Alabama for SEC and National Titles, but Smart has a talented squad, a recruiting hotbed, improving facilities and a hungry fanbase. He's a pretty good coach too.
