Countdown to College Football: Day 50 - Minnesota
We have hit 50 days till the start of college football. Time to heat up the tater tot hot dish, we preview Minnesota, you betcha.
School: University of Minnesota
Mascot: Golden Gophers
Fight Song: Minnesota Rouser
Head Coach: P.J. Fleck (30-22, 1st year at Minnesota)
Stadium: TCF Bank Stadium (Capacity: 50,805)
Best Place to Eat on Campus:
Al's Breakfast Cafe was founded in 1950 in a converted storage shed behind an auto parts store. It is the thinnest restaurant in the area. It also servers a wonderfully hearty breakfast. This is the first restaurant we have had on here that has its own Wikipedia page.
Greatest Moment in Program History:
Minnesota has had plenty of or football teams over the years, but conference titles have been sparse. In 1961 Minnesota made their second consecutive Rose Bowl. They beat UCLA easily and finished the season with the highest ranking in program history.
Current State of the Program:
Tracy Claeys and Jerry Kill had built a solid program built on a sound defense and a physical running game. However, when there is a new Athletic Director and a significant number of players are implicated in sexual assault, and the remaining players staged a short lived boycott of their bowl game, it isn't surprising that changes are made.
Self anointed life coach, spiritual guide and own personal hype man P.J. Fleck was hired to replace Claeys. Fleck was the exciting up and coming coach of 2016 with his "Row the Boat" slogan and success with Western Michigan. It will be interesting to see how Fleck's touchy feely personality meshes with the gritty recruits of Claeys. Whether Fleck, a guy that the image obsessed Oregon Ducks talked to and decided was a little flake, can succeed in one of the toughest conferences in the country will be one of the more intriguing things to watch of the next couple years.
