Countdown to College Football - Day 53 - Purdue
Today on the internet's greatest college football countdown we have one of the rare schools that shares their mascot with a cocktail.
School: Purdue University
Fight Song: Hail Purdue
Head Coach: Jeff Brohm (30-10, 0-0 at Purdue)
Stadium: Ross-Ade Stadium (Capacity: 57,236)
Best Place to Eat on Campus:
Bruno's has been serving hand tossed pizza's since 1955. They also have a solid and likely heartburn inducing sandwich selection.
Greatest Moment in Program History:
The greatest era of Purdue football belonged to Joe Tiller's squads. His spread passing offense and undersized but physical defenses punched well above their weight during Tiller's time at Purdue. However, they never quite achieved the signature program win, aside from earning a Rose Bowl birth in 2000 and beating a highly ranked but pouting Kansas State team in the 1998 Alamo Bowl. In 1966 Purdue won the Rose Bowl, and beat the legendary coach John Mckay while doing it.
Current State of the Program:
Darrell Hazell took a middling Purdue program and nuked it. The offense didn't fit the talent, then the talent that he recruited to fit the offense lacked talent. They were generic, unimaginative and poorly conditioned. The only way for new coach Jeff Brohm to go is up. It will take a few years for Purdue to become a team that routinely makes bowl games, but Brohm is a winning coach and is clever offensively. Purdue won't ever get the same athletes as Ohio State or Michigan, they must win by developing players and scheming. Brohm seems like the kind of coach that can do just that.
