Countdown to College Football: Day 42: Florida Gators
Friday has arrived. Today we head to the swamp.
School: University of Florida
Fight Song: The Orange and Blue
Head Coach: Jim McElwain (41-24, 19-8 at Florida)
Stadium: Ben Hill Griffin Stadium (Capacity: 88,548)
Best Place to Eat on Campus:
Bagels and Noodles seems to be custom made for a college student. They serve breakfast fare and generic Asian cuisine. Culinary expertise is lost on the greasy taste buds of college students.
Greatest Moment in Program History:
Of the Gators three National Championships, the first is likely the sweetest. After winning the SEC Championship, the Gators faced the hated Florida State Seminoles in a rematch of a Seminoles victory in the last regular season game. The Florida Fun N Gun offense scored 52 points, thrashing Florida State in a 32 point victory.
Current State of the Program:
In each of the last two years, the Gators have won a weak SEC East and made the SEC Championship game. In both years, they've been dismembered by Alabama. Florida has lacked the offensive line and toughness to play with Alabama. It's an issue that can only be resolved by strong recruiting. Florida has had bad luck with the quarterback position as well. Notre Dame transfer Malik Zaire might be the steadying force behind center that the Gators are craving. McElwain has done a solid job at Florida, but fans of the program will want more than just SEC East titles in the future.
