Countdown to College Football: Day 45 - Kansas State
Our countdown brings us to the Little Apple, Manhattan, Kansas.
School: Kansas State
Fight Song: Wildcat Victory
Head Coach: Bill Snyder (202-105-1)
Stadium: Bill Snyder Family Stadium (Capacity: 53,000)
Best Place to Eat on Campus:
The So Long Saloon's Resist Temptation burger gets repeatedly mentioned in our research. A fried egg and bacon on a burger, if you are willing to pull that pin and throw that grenade of artery clogging fun, is excellent, and earns our recommendation.
Greatest Moment in Program History:
From 1993 to 1997, Bill Snyder's Kansas State squads went into their annual matchup with the powerhouse that was Nebraska insisting that this was the year they would beat Nebraska and reign over the Big 8/12. Each time they were swiftly rebuffed. In 1998, for the second straight year, Kansas State was undefeated, and for the first time in years, Nebraska was vulnerable. Kansas State won 40-30, thanks to an uncalled facemask late in the game that Cornhusker fans are still grousing about. This was the height of Kansas State football, they had finally knocked off Goliath.
Current State of the Program:
Kansas State under Bill Snyder is steady, tottering between 5-10 wins yearly, always competitive but never threatening. Snyder's time left at Kansas State is coming to an end, and the future of the program lies in who will replace him. Snyder wants his son to take over, a steady succession of athletic directors have resisted this idea, instead wishing to lure a top flight coach to Manhattan to take the program back to its dominance of the late 90's. Kansas State will likely be bowl eligible and feisty again this year, but the real intrigue lies in the question of who will lead the program in the future.
