Countdown to College Football: Day 46 - Rutgers

Happy Monday. Today we preview one of the participants in the first college football game ever played, Rutgers.

School: Rutgers University

Mascot: Scarlet Knights

Fight Song: The Bells Must Ring

Head Coach: Chris Ash (2-10)

Stadium: High Point Solutions Stadium (Capacity: 52,454)

Best Place to Eat on Campus:

Hansel and Griddle has sandwiches, panini's, burgers and wings and is wildly regarded as the best restaurant on campus as well as the essential menu for college students.

Greatest Moment in Program History:

In 2006, Greg Schiano had turned around the inept Rutgers program and were 8-0 coming into a Thursday night clash with undefeated and 3rd ranked Louisville.  The previous week, Louisville had taken down 3rd ranked West Virginia.  Louisville jumped out to a 25-7 lead before running out of gas. Rutgers ground away at the lead and kicked a field goal with one second remaining to take a 28-25 lead. Louisville's last chance was thwarted with a sack, kicking off one of the wildest celebrations I have seen.  Greg Schiano standing in the middle of the field, trying to make his way to shake Bobby Petrino's hand, but giving up and standing, watching the mass of screaming, leaping humanity, is an image I've always enjoyed.

Current State of the Program:

For one week in 2006, Rutgers was the toast of the town in college football.  A decade later, the program is a complete disaster.  Schiano left for the NFL and Kyle Flood, although decent on the field, ran afoul of the administration and his players ran into trouble with the law far too much. It's hard to tell how good of a coach Chris Ash is, as the team last year was bereft of talent on both sides of the ball.  The offense was shutout four times and cracked 20 points only twice in nine conference games.  It's hard to imagine the team being any worse.  However, another tough schedule in one of the countries tougher conferences means any improvement in record will be nominal.
