MLB Pick'Em 07/01

Welcome to July everyone! I can't believe this year is half over already. Both the baseball season and the year itself are flying by. In a couple weeks we will have the All-Star break, which I am looking forward too. That means a nice little break for me as well. Until then we soldier on and start a new month. We are looking to continue building and for this to be our best month yet. First yesterdays results:

Here are today's picks:

Red Sox (Sale) vs Blue Jays (Liriano)

Do I really need to write a few sentences about why I am picking Chris Sale and the Red Sox in this one? No? Good.

Pick: Red Sox

Indians (Tomlin) vs Tigers (Zimmermann) Game 1:

This was taken from yesterdays picks. The pitcher for the Tigers maybe different but it works the same for Jordan Zimmermann as it did for Anibal Sanchez. This is a dud of a pitching matchup. I think both offenses will be on high alert and that runs will come fast and furious. I like the Indians in this matchup by something like a 9-6 score.

Pick: Indians

Rangers (Hamels) vs White Sox (Holland)

Cole Hamels did not look good in his first start after coming off the disabled list. He was going against a much better offense than the White Sox offense he gets to go against today. I think he bounces back and gets his first win in two months. He won’t be lights out, but will be effective enough to get the win.

Pick: Rangers

Twins (Berrios) vs Royals (Farrell) Game 1:

Luke Farrell is making his Major League debut today against the Twins. You know how I feel about pitcher making their first career start. Combine that with the fact he is going against Jose Berrios and I think that game 1 goes to the Twins.

Pick: Twins

Braves (Dickey) vs Athletics (Cotton)

Are the Atlanta Braves really the second best team in the National League East? I think they might be. After getting a great start yesterday, R.A Dickey looks to keep the Braves on the right track. I think he will. I think the Braves take game 2 of this series and once again gets the better of Oakland.

Pick: Braves

Giants (Moore) vs Pirates (Kuhl)

It was around this time last year the Giants started looking for starting pitching, and they settled on Matt Moore to help get them to the playoffs. What a difference a year makes. Now Matt Moore is 3-8 and the Giants are 20 games under .500, and that is with them winning the last four games. I think they make it five in a row today and Moore pitches like the player they wanted him to be last year.

Pick: Giants

Rays (Odorizzi) vs Orioles (Bundy)

Two more middling American League East teams are squaring off at Camden Yards as Baltimore and Tampa Bay go head to head. Honestly this game is a coin flip for me. You just don’t know what Dylan Bundy you are going to get. I think the good Bundy comes out today and he leads the Orioles back to .500 with a win today.

Pick: Orioles

Cubs (Butler) vs Reds (Stephens)

Jackson Stephens is making his Major League debut. Against the World Series Champs. Cubs win. Cubs win. Cubs win.

Pick: Cubs

Marlins (Koehler) vs Brewers (Davies)

Tom Koehler got demoted in April because he wasn’t pitching well. Now he is back in the rotation for the Marlins. Usually that doesn’t bode well when it happens. I don’t think it will today either. The Brewers rough him up and get the win.

Pick: Brewers

Phillies (Hellickson) vs Mets (Wheeler)

Zack Wheeler is coming off the D.L to pitch for the Mets today. That means I like the Phillies.

Pick: Phillies

Indians (Carrasco) vs Tigers (Boyd) Game 2:

Anibal Sanchez is so bad that the Tigers didn’t even move him to pitch either game today, despite him being the scheduled starter yesterday. That is a smart move for Detroit. Having both Sanchez and Zimmermann throw in a doubleheader would be a disaster. Matthew Boyd will give them more innings, and he will give them the win in game 2 as well.

Pick: Tigers

Nationals (Gonzalez) vs Cardinals (Wacha)

After Tanner Roark got shelled yesterday (again) the Nationals are looking for Gio Gonzalez to give them some innings to rest a very tired (and shaky) bullpen. He will give them six innings but I don’t think they will be that good. It will have to be a grind for Gio. I think the Cardinals will be very patient and make him work, and will be victorious because of that strategy.

Pick: Cardinals

Yankees (Montgomery) vs Astros (Martes)

Jordan Montgomery had a great June for the Yankees. He was 4-0 with an ERA just over 2.5 in five starts. Now he faces his toughest test in the Astros. If this game were in Yankee Stadium I would be more inclined to pick the Astros, who are world beaters on the road but just average at home, but since it is in Houston I am going to go with the Yankees to get the win.

Pick: Yankees

Twins (Jorge) vs Royals (Hammel) Game 2:

This is tough for me. I hate picking pitcher making their Major League debut, but I also don’t really enjoy picking Jason Hammel. Hammel has been much better in the month of June. I am not very confident, but I am going with the veteran to get the win and the Royals to get the split.

Pick: Royals

Mariners (Gaviglio) vs Angels (Nolasco)

Ricky Nolasco leads the Major Leagues in home runs allowed this season. He has allowed three home runs in his career to both Robinson Cano and Nelson Cruz. I think at least one of them gets another one today and the Mariners bats stay hot and get the win to get back to .500.

Pick: Mariners

Dodgers (Hill) vs Padres (Overton)

Dillon Overton couldn’t even stick in the Mariners pitching staff this year, and they have used so many pitchers I think I saw Jamie Moyer on the mound a couple weeks ago. That isn’t a good sign for a Padres team that is looking for something positive. Won’t happen today Friars.

Pick: Dodgers

Rockies (Chatwood) vs Diamondbacks (Greinke)

I feel like these two teams have played each other for like two weeks straight. They meet yet again today and the Diamondbacks have a big edge on the mound with Greinke. Arizona rebounds after a tough loss yesterday and will get the win to even up this series.

Pick: Diamondbacks
