Countdown To College Football: Day 77 - Army

Nevermind the lateness of the hour on this Friday evening, we venture forth to West Point.

The Vitals:

School: Army

Mascot: Black Knights

Fight Song: On, Brave Old Army Team

Head Coach: Jeff Monken (52-39, 14-23 at Army)

Best Place to Eat on Campus: Out of pure respect for the man, we give the honor to General Patton's Tavern. A close second is MacArthur's Riverview Restaurant. At Patton's, we recommend trying their signature cocktail the Armored Assault. If you don't know who either Patton or MacArthur are, close the web page and read a book.

Greatest Program Moment:

In 1944, the great Colonel Red Blaik's Army squad outscored opponents by an average score of 56-4. They faced 2nd ranked and undefeated Navy in the final game of the season, the winner to be crowned the National Champion.  Army won 23-7 to win the title, a feat they would repeat in similar fashion the following year. Blaik won two titles with Army and finished in the top ten in eight of his eighteen seasons.

Current State of the Program:

Army was bad for a long time.  Before the 2016 season they had finished with a losing record 17 of the last 18 seasons and had lost to Navy 14 consecutive times. Jeff Monken, whose coaching resume seems designed specifically to run the triple option for a military academy, finally broke through and led Army to an 8-5 record.  The losing streak to Navy was snapped and the Black Knights won their fourth bowl game in program history.  Winning consistently at Army has proven to be a tall order in the last few decades, but it would seem that Monken is the right guy to make it happen.

Prediction: 7-5
