MLB Pick'Em 06/23

Another day of picking games and another one over .500. That makes it six out of seven days, and we are now a season high 106 games over .500. Exactly half of those (53) are this month alone. We are figuring it out and we are riding the wave. Come join us, the water is fine.

Here are today's picks:

Rangers (Darvish) vs Yankees (Tanaka)

This is the first time these two pitchers have faced off in the United States. It has lost a bit of luster this year as Tanaka as gone in the tank, but the Japanese media will still be out in droves. As far as the game goes I will take the Rangers to get the win and move back over .500 today.

Pick: Rangers

Reds (Castillo) vs Nationals (Strasburg)

I was wrong yesterday about the Mariners pitcher making his Major League debut. I don’t think I will be wrong today. Luis Castillo is going against Stephen Strasburg, not Daniel Norris. I am going to go with the nationals in this one today.

Pick: Nationals

Angels (Meyer) vs Red Sox (Porcello)

I said this earlier in the year when teams were unveiling statues and retiring numbers. When a team retires a number never go against that team. The Red Sox are retiring David Ortiz’ number today. Enough said

Pick: Red Sox

Cubs (Lackey) vs Marlins (Urena)

Jose Urena has been a revelation since he got moved to the starting rotation. One of those games was a win over the Cubs a few weeks ago. John Lackey had a great last start, but I don’t see it happening two times in a row. I think that Urena and the Marlins will get the win today to even up this weekend series at one game apiece.

Pick: Marlins

Orioles (Jimenez) vs Rays (Archer)

The Orioles have now allowed at least five runs in an MLB record 19 consecutive games. That is the biggest reason why they have fallen to two games under .500. Now they are facing a lineup that hits a ton of home runs, and the pitcher they are throwing likes to give up home runs. I see the Rays hitting at least two home runs and the Rays getting the win.

Pick: Rays

Twins (Mejia) vs Indians (Bauer)

The Indians are hot right now. The Twins are not. These two teams played last week and the Indians swept four games from the Twins. They make it five in a row today.

Pick: Indians

Brewers (Nelson) vs Braves (Foltynewicz)

The Brewers have the better offense and the better pitching going today. The Braves have been playing well the last couple of weeks but the Brewers are the better team. I think Milwaukee takes game one today behind the strong arm of Jimmy Nelson.

Pick: Brewers

Athletics (Cotton) vs White Sox (Pelfrey)

I still don’t trust Jharel Cotton. He has got great stuff and an electric arm, but no one knows where it is going. Then he has too make sure he throws a strike and he gets hit. Hard. Today will be no different. I like the White Sox today to get the win in the battle of division cellar dwellers.

Pick: White Sox

Blue Jays (Happ) vs Royals (Junis)

These are two of the teams in the American League that are hovering right around .500. It feels like the entire league is right around that mark. In fact, eight of the fifteen teams are within three games of .500, either above or below. That is quite the logjam. It will spread itself out as the teams continue to play each other, starting with this one. In this game I like the Royals to get the win and get to .500.

Pick: Royals

Pirates (Taillon) vs Cardinals (Wainwright)

Still on the side of Jameson Taillon. Not only is he coming back from testicular cancer but he has pitched well since his return. He is the best story of the year so far and I am going to pick him every chance I can. The fact that he is facing Adam Wainwright is only a bonus, as Wainwright has struggled this year with an ERA of almost six.

Pick: Pirates

Phillies (Leiter Jr.) vs Diamondbacks (Corbin)

The Diamondbacks own the best home record in the Major Leagues. They aren’t just a team that does it at home however. They just took two out of three games against the Rockies at Coors Field. Their reward is playing the Phillies at home. That is a damn good reward.

Pick: Diamondbacks

Rockies (Freeland) vs Dodgers (Wood)

This is the Rockies reward. After playing the Diamondbacks they now get to face the Dodgers, another team that is 20+ games over .500. Plus they are facing Alex Wood, who still hasn’t lost.

Pick: Dodgers

Tigers (Fulmer) vs Padres (Perdomo)

The Tigers have lost six games in a row. I think this is a get right game for them. I think Fulmer shuts the Padres down and the offense takes out the frustrations of the last week on Luis Perdomo.

Pick: Tigers

Astros (Musgrove) vs Mariners (Hernandez)

Don’t look now but the Mariners are over .500!! They have done that despite using 11 starting pitchers already and having their opening day lineup healthy for about three games this season. Two of those three games have been the last two, and the offense has looked amazing. Now they are getting Felix back as well. I like the Mariners to get their sixth win in a row today.

Pick: Mariners

Mets (Lugo) vs Giants (Blach)

These teams both suck. One of them has to win I guess.

Pick: Mets
