College Football Countdown: Day 66 - West Virginia

Next on our countdown is a school with one of my favorite coaches, uniforms and fanbases in all of college football.

School: West Virginia University

Mascot: The Mountaineer

Fight Song: Hail West Virginia

Head Coach: Dana Holgorsen (46-31)

Stadium: Milan Puskar Stadium (Capacity 60,000)

Best Place to Eat on Campus:

Mario's Fish Bowl has been around since 1963, back when a "Fish Bowl" of beer cost a whole 35 cents. However, I have never had a pepperoni roll, and apparently it is a big deal in Morgantown. Such a big deal that Chico Bakery serves the "Official Pepperoni roll of WVU".

Greatest Moment in Program History:

My favorite West Virginia football moment was when they scored roughly 654 points on Clemson in the 2011 Orange Bowl. But this isn't about me.  West Virginia has had quite a few great teams, and big wins, in the last three decades.  At the end of the 2007 season, Rich Rodriguez fled for what turned out to be a brief and acrimonious tenure at Michigan. For their bowl game, a Fiesta Bowl matchup against highly ranked Oklahoma, West Virginia turned to Bill Stewart to lead them. He nailed the pregame speech, and the Runaway Beer Truck himself, Owen Schmidt, carried West Virginia to a resounding victory.

Current State of the Program:

Dana Holgorsen's time at West Virginia started great, lagged in the middle, and now appears to be on the uptick once again. The issue for a couple years, was an inability for both sides of the ball to excel at the same time.  Tony Gibson has built a solid defensive squad, and the offense, after being restructured and enduring a couple failed experiments at quarterback, appears to have righted itself. Holgorsen is a lovable nut with fantastic hair, and he's an offensive wizard. West Virginia is a definite contender for the Big 12 title.
