Countdown to College Football: Day 69 - Ole Miss
We missed day 70 on our countdown to due some unforeseen technical issues. Accept our apologies, and my laptops as well.
School: The University of Mississippi
Fight Song: Forward Rebels
Head Coach: Hugh Freeze (69-32, 39-25 at Ole Miss)
Stadium: Vaught - Hemingway Stadium (Capacity: 64,038)
Best Place to Eat on Campus:
Handy Andy's is old school BBQ, which is near and dear to my heart. However, if you are going to Ole Miss, you are tailgating at The Grove.
Greatest Moment in Program History:
In 2014, Hugh Freeze was in his 3rd year at Ole Miss. The program had steadily improved and now sported a talented and athletic defense that was among the best in the SEC. Ole Miss was 4-0 and ready for their toughest test against undefeated Alabama. ESPN College Gameday came to Oxford for one of their more memorable shows. In a great game, Ole Miss took the lead late as Hugh Freeze called a great game, and the defense held on with an interception in the end zone.
Current State of the Program:
Ole Miss was on a steady climb entering the 2016 season. In the opener, they took a 28-6 lead against 4th ranked Florida State with their defense completely emasculating the FSU offensive line. Suddenly, the lead evaporated, Florida State won 45-34, and a wildly inconsistent and frustrating season began. It was generally assumed that Ole Miss, with their rapid increase of talent in recruiting, would run afoul of the NCAA. Word of scholarship reduction and a bowl ban have begun to seep out and would significantly hamper the Rebels chance to compete in the SEC. Freeze is a good coach and should have the team back in a bowl game again this year, but with sanctions looming, the future looks dark for Ole Miss.
