MLB Pick'Em 06/16
This weekend we will hit 1,000 games played for the season. This season is going so fast, can't believe we are quickly hitting the halfway point. We have some ground to make up if we want to hit our goal, and it will start today. Here are the results from yesterday.
Red Sox vs Phillies, pick Red Sox, LOST
Brewers vs Cardinals, pick Brewers, WON
Rays vs Tigers, pick Rays, LOST
Dodgers vs Indians, pick Dodgers, LOST
Nationals vs Mets, pick Nationals, WON
Orioles vs White Sox, pick Orioles, LOST
Mariners vs Twins, pick Twins, WON
Yankees vs Athletics, pick Yankees, LOST
Giants vs Rockies, pick Rockies, WON
Royals vs Angels, pick Angels, LOST
Yesterday's Picks: 4-6
Guest Picks: 17-11
Monthly Picks: 114-86
Yearly Picks: 536-455
Here are today's picks:
Nationals (Scherzer) vs Mets (Matz)
All the Nationals needed to get right was to play the Mets. That shouldn’t be surprising. The National League East is horrible this year. The Nationals could conceivably have this division locked up by the middle of August. Today is more of the same, as Scherzer dominates and the Nationals get even further ahead of the lowly Mets.
Cardinals (Marinez) vs Orioles (Gausman)
I really had high hopes for Kevin Gausman this year. I thought he would continue where he left off at the end of last year and take another step forward this year. That hasn’t materialized. He has regressed to the point where the Orioles have no faith in him whatsoever. Nor do I. I think the Cardinals get to him early and often and get the win today.
Cubs (Butler) vs Pirates (Williams)
I have no reason why Trevor Williams is still in the rotation for the Pirates. I know everyone has struggled for them this year, but surely they can find someone better than him for that fifth spot. Until they do I will pick them to lose every fifth day.
Diamondbacks (Corbin) vs Phillies (Nola)
I was right in thinking that the Phillies would get a win against the Red Sox. I just picked the wrong day. Definitely did not think that the one win they would get in four days would be against Chris Sale, but that’s baseball. Now they face probably the hottest team in baseball. The Diamondbacks are 18 games better than the Phillies. This is an easy pick.
White Sox (Quintana) vs Blue Jays (Biagini)
I really want to pick against the Blue Jays in this one. The Jays have been one game under .500 seven times this year and have yet to get the win to get them to that .500 mark. They try again today. With the way Jose Quintana has pitched this year I think this is finally their time.
Pick: Blue Jays
Dodgers (Wood) vs Reds (Adleman)
Until Alex Wood loses a game he gets the Clayton Kershaw or Dallas Keuchel treatment.
Rays (Ramirez) vs Tigers (Norris)
The Tampa Bay Rays are back to one game over .500. One of my favorite games this season is “how many times will the Rays be at .500 this season?” After today it will be one more time. The Tigers get the win and bring them back to .500 yet again.
Marlines (Straily) vs Braves (Newcomb)
Ugh… Two floundering National League East teams. I am just going to pick the Braves and move on.
Mariners (Paxton) vs Rangers (Ross)
Tyson Ross is making his first appearance in 14 months today as the Rangers and Mariners open up a three game series in Texas. I am sure he will be on a very strict pitch count and the bullpen for the Rangers will be heavily involved. That is a good sign for the Mariners as the bullpen for the Rangers isn’t very good. I think the Mariners win this game today off of the Rangers bullpen.
Indians (Carrasco) vs Twins (Turley)
This could be a big series between the top two teams in the American League Central. Game one of this series will go to the Indians. Nik Turley is making his second start of his career, and his first one did not go well. I think the Indians get to him and win comfortably today.
Padres (Diaz) vs Brewers (Guerra)
This is the situation of the Padres pitching staff this year. A week ago they put Miguel Diaz in their starting rotation. Miguel Diaz, that of an ERA over 7 in the bullpen, was thought of enough to join the rotation. That makes absolutely no sense. I don’t think he makes it out of the third inning and the Brewers win big.
Red Sox (Pomeranz) vs Astros (Fiers)
Two of the top three teams in the American League are going head to head in a possible playoff preview this weekend. This series should be fun but this pitching matchup leaves a little to be desired. I think both of these teams will be looking to add starting pitching at the deadline, but in this game today I think Mike Fiers and the Astros will get the win.
Giants (Samardzija) vs Rockies (Senzatela)
Jeff Samardzija at Coors Field? Sign me up for a Rockies win today!
Yankees (Severino) vs Athletics (Manaea)
I have picked the Yankees quite a bit the past couple of weeks, and in the last few games they have let me down. I know I am probably going to regret this, but I am going to pick against them today. I like Sean Manaea and I think he will contain the Yankees offense today enough for the Athletics to get the win.
Royals (Kennedy) vs Angels (Chavez)
Ian Kennedy is still winless in 2017. As much as I want him to get his first win today, I don’t see it happening. I think that the Angels win a high scoring game today, something like 7-4, and they keep Kennedy winless.
