Countdown to College Football - Day 71 - Maryland

The Vitals:

School: University of Maryland

Mascot: Terrapins

Fight Song: The internet tells me that their fight song is called "The Maryland Fight Song".

Head Coach: D.J. Durkin (6-7)

Stadium: Maryland Stadium (Capacity: 51,802)

Best Place to Eat on Campus:

The Maryland Food Collective has been around since 1975. Straight up sandwiches, nothing special, but we like old haunts here.

Greatest Moment in Program History:

The Ralph Friedgen era began spectacularly at Maryland with three double digit win seasons.  His first season ended with an annihilation at the hands of Steve Spurrier's last loaded Florida squad.  At the end of the 2002 season, they found themselves in the Peach Bowl, against another SEC stalwart in Phillip Fulmer's Tennessee Volunteers. Maryland's defense swarmed Tennessee, and Friedgen, one of college football's best play callers, carved up Tennessee in a 30-3 victory.

Current State of the Program:

Randy Edsall took a good football program and wound it into his own personal form of mediocrity.  D.J. Durkin is a good football coach and the program was quickly competitive again.  The gap between Maryland and the top teams in the conference remains large, but Durkin and his staff should continue to grow and build a more competitive program. Unfortunately, the Big 10 remains powerful and the schedule contains very few easy wins.
