Greatest Moment in Program History:

In 2003, Jeff Tedford was in his second year at Cal.  The program had cratered two years before with a 1-10 effort to conclude the Tom Holmoe era.  Tedford sparked immediate improvement. #3 USC came into Cal looking unbeatable. Cal, quarterbacked by some guy named Aaron Rodgers, jumped to a 21-7 lead and pulled off a 34-31 win in triple overtime.  From mid October 2002 to January 2006, this was the only game USC lost.  Cal went to their first of seven consecutive bowl games in the most successful stretch in modern program history.

Current State of the Program:

The Sonny Dykes era mercifully ended after another miserable defense engaged in subterfuge against a promising offense. The program under Dykes was one of poor conditioning and awful coaching on defense. Justin Wilcox, a well traveled and experienced defensive coach has been hired to right the ship. Wilcox has always struggled defending spread offenses, which might make him a bad fit in the current Pac 12. However, Wilcox has assembled a talented and experienced coaching staff who should teach an attention to detail that has been missing at Cal. There will be a definite transition period as Wilcox weeds out the bad habits of the previous regime.
