Countdown to College Football: Day 85 "OSU"

The Vitals

School: Oregon State University
Mascot: Beavers
Fight Song: Hail to Old OSU

Head Coach: Gary Andersen (6-18 at OSU, 55-56 Overall)

Best Place to Eat on Campus:
One might be compelled to go with Block 15 with its fine selection of craft beers. However, I like classic joints, American Dream Pizza has been around for 27 years and has a website that looks just as old, I love it.

Greatest Program Moment:
The 2000 season ended with a three way tie for the Pac 10 title.  Washington squeezed by Oregon State, who in turn had thumped Oregon(who beat Washington) in the Civil War.  Washington went to the Rose Bowl, the Beavers went to the Fiesta Bowl, and Oregon was kicked down to the Holiday Bowl.  Dennis Erickson had taken over after Mike Reilly left for the first time, added speed and physicality and created the greatest Oregon State team in program history. Their eviscerating of Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl by a score of 41-9 was one of the more dominating performances in the bowl games history.

Current State of The Program:
Gary Andersen took over a program with marginal talent, little depth, and what appeared to be an aversion to strength training.  His first year was a disaster as his style didn’t mesh with the talent. Following the rebuilding rule of “First you lose big, then you lose small, then you win small, then you win big”, the Beavers were much improved in 2016.  Stylistically, they began to resemble and Andersen coached team with a physical running game and a stouter defense.  It does remain to be seen how Andersen’s coverage scheme handles the powerful Pac 12 offenses on a week to week basis, but the team will continue to improve, regardless of if it shows significantly in the win column.
