MLB Pick'Em 05/09
May has not been kind to us so far. The picks must keep coming and we must fight through, but it has been a struggle. With the Cubs-Rockies doubleheader we have 16 games today. That is a great day to get back on the right side in a big way. Here we go.
Giants vs Mets, pick Mets, WON
Nationals vs Orioles, pick Nationals, LOST
Indians vs Blue Jays, pick Indians, LOST
Yankees vs Reds, pick Reds, LOST
Cardinals vs Marlins, pick Marlins, LOST
Royals vs Rays, pick Rays, LOST
Cubs vs Rockies, pick Rockies, POSTPONED
Angels vs Athletics, pick Athletics, WON
Pirates vs Dodgers, pick Dodgers, WON
Rangers vs Padres, pick Padres, WON
Yesterday's Picks: 4-5
Monthly Picks: 45-58
Yearly Picks: 240-234
Cubs (Arrieta) vs Rockies (Senzatela) Game 1
I can’t lift my prediction from yesterday because it was predicated on the Cubs being tired from that 18 inning game on Sunday. Now that they got an unexpected day off they will be more refreshed and ready to go. Because of that I think the Cubs win game one of this doubleheader against Colorado. More on these two later.
Rangers (Griffin) vs Padres (Weaver)
Jerad Weaver faces an old American League West foe today in the Texas Rangers. Weaver has started more games against the Rangers than any other team in baseball, and he has had a lot of success against them. That was old Jerad Weaver though. New Jerad Weaver doesn’t have success against anyone. That will continue today.
Nationals (Scherzer) vs Orioles (Jiminez)
Both of these offenses come in scintillating as the battle of the beltway continues. One of the pitchers comes in hot as well. The other one is Ubaldo Jiminez. I can see Scherzer keeping the Orioles offense in check. I can’t say the same about Jiminez.
Mariners (Miranda) vs Phillies (Eickhoff)
This is why I love interleague baseball. Two teams that rarely get to see each other are squaring off today as the Phillies and Mariners play in Philadelphia. The Mariners are playing well right now, despite their rash of injuries. The Phillies are 2-8 in their last 10 games but it is against quality competition. I like Miranda and the Mariners to come away with the win today.
Indians (Carrasco) vs Blue Jays (Bolsinger)
The Blue Jays are starting to play like a Major League Baseball team after getting off to that horrid start. They are 6-3 in their last nine games and look to keep it going against Carrasco and the Indians. I don’t think they will however. I like Cleveland to get the win today and even up the series. Carrasco will be too dominant for the Blue Jays hitters.
Yankees (Sabathia) vs Reds (Adleman)
I love watching C.C Sabathia swing a bat. He is like Cecil Fielder up there. He comes up hacking and he usually doesn’t make contact, but if he does it goes a long way. With the way the Yankees are hitting he might have a shot to do it today. I like the Yankees in this one to continue to roll with their offense carrying them again.
Giants (Samardzija) vs Mets (Wheeler)
I don’t think anyone saw this coming with the Giants. They were supposed to contend for a playoff spot, not for the worst record in baseball. Obviously there are a lot of games left, but this is still as shocking a demise as I have seen in sometime. That being said, I like their chances today because Zach Wheeler still can’t get deep into games. He has pitched into the sixth only twice this year, and he will continue to tax the Mets bullpen today.
Cardinals (Wainwright) vs Marlins (Straily)
The only dark spot for the Cardinals the last month has been the pitching of Adam Wainwright. He still has an ERA over 6 as we are quickly approaching the quarter pole of the season. I don’t think he has that much left in the tank to be honest. I like the Marlins to get to him today and to stop the winning streak of St. Louis.
Royals (Young) vs Rays (Andriese)
The Royals are going with the dreaded pitch by committee today. I can’t see that ending well for most teams, and especially a team that can’t rely on their offense to carry their pitching.
Red Sox (Pomeranz) vs Brewers (Peralta)
Like the Phillies and Mariners, this is a matchup that rarely happens. In fact, it has been 14 years since the Red Sox played a game in Milwaukee. The Red Sox are sending lefty Drew Pomeranz to the mound today against a team that feasts on left handed pitching. I like that to continue for the Brewers, who get the win today against Boston.
Twins (Santiago) vs White Sox (Pelfrey)
These two teams are so far exceeding the low expectations the pundits had before the season started, and they look to continue as they square off in Chicago. The pitching matchup has a decided advantage for the Twins. The lineups sway a little bit to Chicago in my opinion, but not enough to offset the advantage Santiago has. Twins win.
Braves (Colon) vs Astros (Morton)
These two teams are trending in opposite directions right now. The Astros can’t lose and the Braves can’t get in the win column. While strange things happen all the time in baseball I am going to play the percentages and say the Astros get the win today.
Cubs (Lackey) vs Rockies (Freeland) Game 2
That is right we have another doubleheader today! The Cubs will need Lackey to get deep into this game and that is asking a lot for a pitcher who isn’t very good and is in Colorado. I like the Rockies to get to him early and often and get the split of the doubleheader.
Tigers (Verlander) vs Diamondbacks (Ray)
This is a tough one for me. Both teams are good and yet the last week they haven’t been playing like they should. I mean the Tigers lost a series to the Athletics for crying out loud. When it is tough like this I look at the starting pitching. They both have similar stats this year but I am going to go with the guy with the long track record. Tigers get back on the right side today.
Angels (Meyer) vs Athletics (Cotton)
The Athletics got back to back walk-off wins over the aforementioned Tigers this past weekend and they look to keep it going against Meyer and the Angels. I do not think they will need a hit in the last inning to beat the Angels today. Alex Meyer is not very good. He wasn’t good in the Minors and he wasn’t good in his first start against the Mariners. And he won’t be good today.
Pirates (Nova) vs Dodgers (Urias)
The kid gets another start for the Dodgers, and he looks to continue his impressive start to the season. He was my #1 Minor League Prospect (Ahead of Yoan Moncada who I have in my dynasty fantasy league) and he is proving me right so far. Urias stays hot and finally gets a win to show for his dominant pitching.
