MLB Pick'Em 05/07

Our main editor is in the Hampton's right now, probably catching lobster illegally and picking up jam on the side of the road. It is up to me, the guy who actually picks the games, to come up with something witty to say here. As you can see from the picks I make, I am not the wittiest person there is. So I am just going to get straight to the picks. But first, yesterdays results.

Monthly Picks: 36-44
Yearly Picks: 231-220

Miami (Urena) vs Mets (Wiik)

Who and who? The Mets and Marlins are throwing two pitchers who are making their first start of the season. This was supposed to be Matt Harvey for the Mets, but he got suspended for three games by the team. Despite that I still like the Mets today to get the win.

Pick: Mets

Blue Jays (Biagini) vs Rays (Cobb)

Biagini starts for Mat Latos today, who was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays. I had the over under for April 30th so I lost that one too. Biagini has not thrown more than 41 pitches in any of his appearances this year, so this will be a pitch by committee game. Those usually don’t go well. It won’t today either.

Pick: Rays

White Sox (Quintana) vs Orioles (Tillman)

Chris Tillman makes his much anticipated 2017 debut today for the Orioles in the series finale against Chicago. He will be opposed by Quintana, who has pitched better in his last few starts. I don’t know what you are going to get with Tillman today, but with the way Quintana is pitching I have a fairly good idea of what he is going do. And that will be enough for the win.

Pick: White Sox

Cardinals (Wacha) vs Braves (Dickey)

The Cardinals won yesterday to get to a game over .500. On Friday I mentioned they have been hovering around .500 for the last two weeks. I think that today they lose and are once again at .500.

Pick: Braves

Brewers (Davies) vs Pirates (Glasnow)

Both of the pitchers have an ERA over six. The bullpens could play a huge part in deciding todays game and avoiding a sweep for the Brewers. The Brewers offense has more weapons than the Pirates in my opinion and since both starting pitchers and both bullpens are similar, that is who I am going to go with today.

Pick: Brewers

Red Sox (Sale) vs Twins (Santana)

With apologies to Dallas Keuchel, this is a matchup between the two best pitchers in the American League so far. This could be a game where just one run wins it. These pitchers are going that well right now. Unfortunately for Sale, he has not gotten a lot of offense behind him. His record is only 2-2, despite an ERA under 1.4 I think that comes back to bite him again today.

Pick: Twins

Indians (Clevinger) vs Royals (Duffy)

Mike Clevinger is getting the call from the Minor Leagues today to replace Corey Kluber in the finale against the Royals. He has pitched well in Triple-A so far and did make 10 starts for the Indians last year. Yesterday was the 10th time already this season that the Royals scored 0 or 1 runs. That is how bad their offense is and why I will pick them to lose.

Pick: Indians

Nationals (Roark) vs Phillies (Hellickson)

The Nationals are sending Tanner Roark to the mound today looking to complete the sweep of Philadelphia. The Phillies are countering with opening day started Jeremy Hellickson. Even though Hellickson struggled in his last game, I still like him and the Phillies to come out on top today and avoid the sweep.

Pick: Phillies

Diamondbacks (Walker) vs Rockies (Chatwood)

Here is the real test for Taijuan Walker. An afternoon against the Rockies at Coors Field. I can either seeing him going seven innings and giving up two runs or getting lifted in the third while allowing seven. I think we have a better chance of seeing the latter. That is why I am going with the Rockies to get the win.

Pick: Rockies

Astros (Fiers) vs Angels (Shoemaker)

Mike Fiers has been the biggest disappointment for the Astros in what is a great start to the season. Matt Shoemaker has unfortunately been exactly what most people expected him to be. Not very good. Now they square off in Houston. I am going to go with Shoemaker and the Angels in this one because he has had some success against the Astros, but it is not with a lot of confidence.

Pick: Angels

Tigers (Norris) vs Athletics (Gray)

Sonny Gray didn’t get injured in his first start of the season for Oakland. That is about the only thing that went right for Gray in that game. He gets the ball again in the finale against Daniel Norris and the Tigers. I think he will be a little better in this game, but it won’t be enough for Oakland. I like the Tigers to take this game.

Pick: Tigers

Rangers (Cashner) vs Mariners (Overton)

The Mariners have 60% of their expected rotation on the disabled list right now and now word is out that Hishashi Iwakuma might not make his next start. You can never use injuries as an excuse in the Major Leagues, and the Mariners just have to keep sending unproven youngsters to the mound. The Mariners offense is starting to come around though, and that is why I like them to win a high scoring game today and take the series against Texas.

Pick: Mariners

Giants (Cueto) vs Reds (Feldman)

Johnny Cueto and Scott Feldman have almost identical ERA’s in 2017. Cueto is 4-1 while Feldman is 1-3. The Giants score a lot more runs for Cueto than the Reds do for Feldman. I look for that to continue today and the Giants get the win and Cueto gets win #5, despite having an ERA of almost 5.

Pick: Giants

Dodgers (McCarthy) vs Padres (Cahill)

The Dodgers have won the first two games of this series and give the ball to McCarthy looking for the sweep. If this game is played I like the chances of them getting it. Rain is in the forecast today in Southern California, but they are going to try to get it in. If they do Dodgers win.

Pick: Dodgers

Yankees (Severino) vs Cubs (Lester)

The Yankees are the hottest team in baseball right now. They are going for a sweep of the Cubs in Wrigley Field, and the biggest reason why is their offense continues to be dominant. Jon Lester looks to contain the Yankee juggernaut today to prevent the sweep. I think Lester does it and the Cubs salvage the finale.

Pick: Cubs
