Countdown to College Football: Day 86 "SMU"
Why are we starting this countdown at day 86? This is just the day it happened, I’m not going to defend it. Starting today, we will countdown one team a day, using an arbitrary ranking method mostly cribbed from CBS Sports.
School: Southern Methodist University
Fight Song: Pony Battle Cry
Head Coach: Chad Morris (7-17, 2 years)
Best Place to Eat on Campus:
The area around campus is ripe with a diverse selection of restaurants. However, if you are in Texas, you probably should indulge in some BBQ. Peggy Sue’s is an old school BBQ joint with all the essentials. They deliver too in case you want a brisket delivered to your door.
Greatest Program Moment:
Thanks to excellent and perfectly “legal” recruiting, SMU assembled the Pony Express(Pour one out for death of great nicknames in sports) backfield starring the legendary Eric Dickerson and Craig James of “CJK5H” fame. In Dickerson’s senior year SMU went undefeated and defeated Pittsburgh and future NFL Hall of Famer Dan Marino in the Cotton Bowl 7-3. It’s also worth noting that SMU has always had one of the best logos in college football.
Current State of The Program:
June Jones left the program much as he found it, with a dearth of homegrown talent and disinterest. SMU decided to hire a coach that gave a damn, longtime Texas high school football coach and former Clemson Offensive Coordinator Chad Morris. The idea being that Morris’s high school football connections will attract recruits to SMU, something that has consistently been a struggle over the past two decades. Morris has succeeded in getting the program back to competitive, and improvement should continue this season.
