MLB Pick'Em 05/26

Today is the day that I, the editor, goes on vacation. So I'll have a bunch of pre-made column for the picker to fill in. I did a lot of research, asking schoolteachers and lab assistants, on how best to format the article for minimal loss in quality from the raw template to finished product. Hopefully it doesn't get all fouled up.

May Today (26th), 2017 Picks:

Tigers (Farmer) vs White Sox (Pelfrey) Game 1:

Both of these teams are calling up pitchers for the doubleheader today. In this game the Tigers are calling up Buck Farmer for a spot start. Buck Farmer is 0-6 in his Major League career. He will not get his first win today.

Pick: White Sox

Athletics (Graveman) vs Yankees (Tanaka)

Masahiro Tanaka has an ERA of over 6.5 two months into the season. He also has a winning record thanks to the juggernaut that is the Yankees offense. I don’t know what Tanaka’s problem has been this year, but this is as good a team as any to get back on track against. Tanaka will get back in the win column today and the Yankees take the first game of the weekend series against the Athletics.

Pick: Yankees

Padres (Perdomo) vs Nationals (Scherzer)

Max Scherzer against the Padres? Pencil in 7 innings, 0 runs, 12 strikeouts. Easy win for the Nationals.

Pick: Nationals

Reds (Adleman) vs Phillies (Nola)

I know the Phillies have been awful in May. The old baseball saying “momentum is only as good as the next days starting pitcher” rings true for them. Aaron Nola is a good starting pitcher. A much better pitcher than Tim Adleman. I think the Phillies get the win today and win two in a row for the first time in a month.

Pick: Phillies

Mets (DeGrom) vs Pirates (Kuhl)

Jacob DeGrom got pushed back from his start yesterday because of inclement weather. Since DeGrom got pushed back I will be picking the mets to win this game. He is the one person on this team that I trust to do anything well.

Pick: Mets

Rangers (Griffin) vs Blue Jays (Bolsinger)

The Blue Jays are supposed to get the left side of their infield back today, with both Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Donaldson returning from injury. I don’t think it will be enough for the Blue Jays to get the win today however. Mike Bolsinger will not be able to stop the Rangers offense and Texas will win today.

Pick: Rangers

Mariners (Gallardo) vs Red Sox (Rodriguez)

Yovanni Gallardo against this Red Sox offense at Fenway Park. Nightmares ensue.

Pick: Red Sox

Royals (Kennedy) vs Indians (Clevinger)

The postponement of the Indians game yesterday means Mike Clevinger gets to pitch against a much worse offense than the Reds. Instead he gets to face the Royals lineup. That is quite the positive change for Clevinger. I picked him to beat the Reds. I will definitely be picking him to beat the Royals.

Pick: Indians

Angels (Chavez) vs Marlins (Straily)

This is Mike Trout’s first trip to Marlins Park. I think he will make it a memorable one. He is white hot right now and the Marlins rotation is not good. Trout will feast all weekend, starting with a home run today off of Dan Straily. The Angels get the win to get back over .500 today, and the Marlins continue to get no help from their starting rotation.

Pick: Angels

Diamondbacks (Godley) vs Brewers (Guerra)

Zack Godley has pitched admirable since replacing Shelby Miller in the starting rotation. He gets a break today as he doesn’t have to face Ryan Braun, who is back on the disabled list. I think the Diamondbacks and Rockies are the two best teams in the National League West. The Diamondbacks get the win today to keep pace with Colorado.

Pick: Diamondbacks

Rays (Archer) vs Twins (Santiago)

After a scintillating start Chris Archer has come back to Earth a bit. He is still pitching effective, just not as good as he was the first month of the season. He has good stuff, a good mindset, and a great work ethic. I think that he gets back on a roll today and pitches very well against the Twins. He leads the Rays to a win and gets them back over .500.

Pick: Rays

Orioles (Gausman) vs Astros (Musgrove)

I do not trust Kevin Gausman against the Seattle Mariners. There is absolutely no way I would trust him against the best team in baseball. This is probably one of his lights out games, but I am still going to say he struggles today. I am going to take the Astros to win this one today.

Pick: Astros

Tigers (Boyd) vs White Sox (Danish) Game 2:

The same reason why I picked the White Sox to win game 1 is the reason why I am picking the Tigers to win game 2.  The White Sox are throwing a call-up for this game. I don’t trust these quick spot starters. They occasionally win games. Not often enough for me to be confident though.

Pick: Tigers

Cardinals (Martinez) vs Rockies (Senzatela)

The Rockies have the best road record in the National League. I’m going to say that again. The Colorado Rockies have the best road record in the National League. Still feels weird to say. They are pretty good at home as well. Rookie Antonio Senzatela wins number seven today.

Pick: Rockies

Cubs (Arrieta) vs Dodgers (Wood)

The two teams that squared off in the NLCS last season meet once again as the Cubs and Dodgers meet in Los Angeles. Jake Arrieta has not been his usual dominant self this year, but Alex Wood has been. He is 5-0 this year with an ERA under 2. I like Wood and the Dodgers to win a low scoring game today.

Pick: Dodgers

Braves (Garcia) vs Giants (Cain)

The Giants went on their run a couple weeks ago by beating up on teams like the Braves. They will continue to do that. I like Cain and the Giants in this one.

Pick: Giants
