MLB Pick'Em 05/02

Welcome to MLB Pick'Em 2017, the best of the worst! And by worst, I mean, sausages! We all love a good wurst. Pronounced vurst. I always enjoy a good sausage and bun plain at first. Maybe I'll spice it up with some mustard. Once in a while, I'll load it up with everything, just to experience the perverse minds out mind. What do you do with your sausage?

May Today (2nd), 2017 Picks

Blue Jays (Latos) vs Yankees (Tanaka)

Mat Latos has been most impressive in his return to Major League Baseball and he now faces his stiffest test of the year. He pitches at Yankee Stadium today and I do not think it will be pretty for him. I have been hard on Latos this year and he has proven me wrong, but today I don’t see him getting out of the fifth inning. Yankees win.
Pick: Yankees

Diamondbacks (Walker) vs Nationals (Roark)

The two best teams in the National League square off (Record wise) when the Nationals and Diamondbacks play this week. This is a good matchup of balanced offenses and pitchers that are hitting their stride. I don’t see Taijuan Walker shutting down the Nationals offense, as they are way too hot right now.
Pick: Nationals

Orioles (Asher) vs Red Sox (Sale)

I am going to leave the politics and race relations to the experts on this one. I am just here to pick baseball games. Today I am going with the Red Sox. They will actually score some runs for Chris Sale and will get the win in a very testy series between the two division rivals.
Pick: Red Sox

Indians (Kluber) vs Tigers (Verlander)

The Indians have already lost three times to the Tigers this year. They only lost four times to them all of last year, in 18 games. The one win that the Indians got was when these two pitchers squared off. Both Verlander and Kluber struggled in that game, with Verlander allowing a career high in home runs. I don’t think that many runs will be scored in this one but I do think the result will be the same.
Pick: Indians

Pirates (Glasnow) vs Reds (Feldman)

The Reds have two come from behind wins in the last two days, including game one of this series with the Pirates. Now they face a pitcher in Tyler Glasnow who has not pitched well to start the year. I like the Reds chances to keep their hot streak going. I don’t even think they will have to come back to get the win.
Pick: Reds

Rays (Cobb) vs Marlins (Volquez)

Edinson Volquez is still looking for his first win of the year for the Marlins as they continue the Florida series against the Rays. I think that today he gets that elusive first win as the Marlins take down the Rays in Miami.
Pick: Marlins

Mets (Harvey) vs Braves (Dickey)

I won’t lie I am at an absolute loss with the New York Metropolitans. I am a lot like them. Should be doing better but for some reason I can’t seem to get any momentum going. Now the Mets face former New York ace R.A Dickey. This is the inconsistent team against the inconsistent pitcher. I may be glutton for punishment here but I am going to go with the Mets to win this one. Prove me right boys!
Pick: Mets

Phillies (Hellickson) vs Cubs (Lester)

The Phillies are 5-0 in games Jeremy Hellickson has started this year. I would say that qualifies as a good first month for their ace. Now he faces his toughest matchup of the year as he faces Lester and the Cubs. The Cubs kind of slept-walked thru April. I feel a huge run coming on for them. I just don’t think it will start today. I am riding the hot hand and going with the Phillies.
Pick: Phillies

Athletics (Gray) vs Twins (Santana)

This is an interesting matchup. You have Sonny Gray making his first start of the season against what was arguably the best pitcher in baseball in the month of April. Ervin Santana has allowed only three runs in his first five starts of the year. Now he faces an offense that hits a lot of home runs but does little else. I like Santana to continue to pitch well and for the Twins to win.
Pick: Twins

Rangers (Hamels) vs Astros (Fiers)

This game could be interesting. Two teams that play each other 16 more times this year and if they are all like game one we are in for some fun. The benches cleared yesterday after Lance McCullers threw behind Mike Napoli. In watching the replay and knowing the situation it makes no sense for him to be throwing at him. I think the ball slipped out of his hand in the Texas heat. We will see if there is a retaliation today. Oh, and in the game I am going with the Rangers to even the series.
Pick: Rangers

White Sox (Quintana) vs Royals (Duffy)

Jose Quintana has one won game this year. It was against the Royals. He will win number two today as he once again shuts down the Royals offense. I use the term “offense” loosely in the Royals case as they still can’t hit.
Pick: White Sox

Brewers (Peralta) vs Cardinals (Martinez)

Carlos Martinez took out his dreads as he tries to change his luck in 2017. Maybe all he needs is to face the Brewers, as he usually has success against them. I like Martinez to pick up his first win of the season today as the Cardinals tie the series at one game apiece against Milwaukee.
Pick: Cardinals

Angels (Shoemaker) vs Mariners (Paxton)

James Paxton. At home. Against the Angels. I won’t be getting cute here.
Pick: Mariners

Giants (Moore) vs Dodgers (Wood)

Two left handers go at it today as the Giants try to take the series against Alex Wood and the Dodgers. The Dodgers struggle against lefties. Matt Moore is a good left handed pitcher. I like his chances of leading the Giants to victory in this one.
Pick: Giants

Rockies (Chatwood) vs Padres (Cahill)

Tyler Chatwood pitches well in two parks. AT&T park in San Francisco and Petco Park in San Diego. He has already shut out the Giants on the road. Now he looks to continues his success against the Padres. I think he will. Chatwood gets the win for the Rockies.
Pick: Rockies
