MLB Pick'Em 05/01

Picks are a dime a dozen. But sometimes those dimes are worth gold. Of course, there's always the chance you realize it was fool's gold all along. Conversely, what does the fool know that we don't? Who's to say the fool isn't a genius?

May Today (1st), 2017 Picks:

Orioles (Bundy) vs Red Sox (Porcello)

What a fun series the last time these two teams squared off eh? We had Pedroia getting spiked by Machado, Machado getting thrown at, and benches clearing. In between all of that there was some decent baseball played as well. This is already Dylan Bundy’s third start against the Red Sox. He has had one good one and one bac one. I think he makes it 2-3 and the Orioles get the win today.
Pick: Orioles

Blue Jays (Estrada) vs Yankees (Severino)

Congratulations to the Toronto Blue Jays, who finally won their first series of the year! It only took them a month to do it. If there is a park for the Blue Jays hitters to get right this is the one to do it in. Yankee Stadium is the Coors Field of the American League and I think a lot of runs will be scored today. Unfortunately for the Jays more will be scored by the home team.
Pick: Yankees

Indians (Bauer) vs Tigers (Norris)

For the first time in five years the Cleveland Indians had a winning record in April and they look to continue that success against the Tigers. Last year the Indians went 14-4 against the Tigers. I look for that to continue this year as the Indians win the first game between the division rivals.
Pick: Indians

Pirates (Cole) vs Reds (Garrett)

Gerrit Cole still hasn’t gotten any help from his offense. He has pitched well but only has a 1-3 record to show for it. He will run his record to 2-3 today. The Pirates get a get-well game against Amir Garrett and they win comfortably.
Pick: Pirates

Rays (Odorizzi) vs Marlins (Chen)

Jake Odorizzi comes off the disabled list today and his reward is a matchup against Chen and the Marlins. A not so bold observation. Neither one of these teams are very good. They have players that are fun to watch (The Marlins more so) but I don’t expect either team to be in contention. Today the battle of the sunshine state goes the way of the Marlins.
Pick: Marlins

Mets (Gsellman) vs Braves (Teheran)

The Mets are an absolute mess right now. Noah Syndergaard is the latest to go down, this time with a strained lat muscle. I think if they had their way Robert Gsellman would be pitching in the minors but they need all the healthy bodies they can get. I think their struggles continue today and Teheran and the Braves get the win.
Pick: Braves

Phillies (Velasquez) vs Cubs (Anderson)

The Cubs are back in the National League after losing two out of three to the Red Sox at Fenway Park, and they get rewarded by a matchup against Velasquez and the Phillies. I don’t think too much of Vince Velasquez, and I think the Cubs hitters will have a field day against the struggling righty. The Cubs win game one of this four game series at Wrigley.
Pick: Cubs

Rangers (Cashner) vs Astros (McCullers)

The Rangers have owned the Astros the last two years, owing a 28-10 record against their in state rivals. They look to continue that dominance when they meet for the first time in 2017 on Monday. This Astros team is better than the last two years. This Rangers team is worse. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Astros flip that 14-5 record against Texas this year. It starts today.
Pick: Astros

White Sox (Covey) vs Royals (Vargas)

Jason Vargas has three great starts and one horrible start to start the season. The horrible start was against the same White Sox team that he is pitching against today. Vargas usually struggles against Chicago and the Royals lineup still can’t hit. I think Vargas will pitch okay today but it won’t be enough as the White Sox win a low scoring game.
Pick: White Sox

Brewers (Davies) vs Cardinals (Wacha)

Both the Brewers and the Cardinals ended the month of April at .500, which is quite impressive for the Cardinals after the way they started the year. St Louis has won 9 out of their last 12 and starting pitching has been the biggest reason why. Michael Wacha looks to continue that trend today and I think he will. Look for Wacha to go seven innings, allow two runs, and the Cardinals win 4-2.
Pick: Cardinals

Giants (Cueto) vs Dodgers (Kershaw)

This is a game where you could see a team bunting in the first inning because both managers know runs will be at a premium. The last time Clayton Kershaw pitched I went against the Dodgers because they were facing a lefty. Cueto is not left handed and I will not be making that mistake again.
Pick: Dodgers
