April Today (24th), 2017 Picks:
Cubs (Anderson) vs Pirates (Kuhl)
Just a week ago the Pirates came into Wrigley Field and swept the Cubs on their home field. Neither one of these pitchers pitched in that series and the Cubs are hot right now, so it could be a different story in Pittsburgh. I don’t think the Cubs will get swept in this series. In fact I think they are winning today behind a strong performance by Brett Anderson.
Rays (Archer) vs Orioles (Jiminez)
After today Chris Archer will have face every other team in the American League East. He hasn’t lost yet and I do not see it happening today either. Archer will flummox the Orioles and Jiminez will not get out of the fifth inning in a Rays win.
Reds (Garrett) vs Brewers (Garza)
Matt Garza makes his 2017 debut for the Brewers today trying to forget a rough 2016 season. He went 6-14 last year and his biggest issue was the long ball. In my opinion Matt Garza is the National League James Shields. That is not a compliment despite Shields pitching okay so far this year. He gives up two home runs today and the Reds get the win.
Twins (Hughes) vs Rangers (Perez)
The Twins have lost four series in a row since a 5-1 start. The Rangers are coming off a sweep of the Royals and are looking for their fifth straight win. Suffice it to say these two teams are trending in the opposite directions as they open up a series in Arlington. I look for the trends to continue today and for the Rangers to get the win against Hughes and the Twins.
Royals (Vargas) vs White Sox (Gonzalez)
Here we are almost a month into the season and Jason Vargas leads the American League in ERA. Baseball really is a fun and interesting sport. He puts his sterling start to the season on the line today against one of the worst offenses in all of baseball. Outside of Avisail Garcia no one has been able to hit the ball for Chicago. I think Vargas’ ERA goes up a bit today but he still pitches well enough to ge the win and run his record to 4-0.
Nationals (Turner) vs Rockies (Anderson)
These teams have the two best records in the National League and now they square off at Coors Field. Jacob Turner will be making his 2017 debut for the Nationals and gets to do it against a hot offense in the thin air in Denver. That is not exactly the best way to start the season. I expect a lot of runs in this one with the home team coming out on top.
Padres (Chacin) vs Diamondbacks (Greinke)
Another start for Jhoulys Chacin and another former Cy Young winner opposes him. These two pitchers have already face each other once and the first round went to Chacin with a 1-0 victory at Petco Park. I like round 2 to go to Greinke and the Diamondbacks.
Blue Jays (Liriano) vs Angels (Nolasco)
The Blue Jays are going for their first series win of the year! At the very worst they will get a split as they face off against Nolasco and the Angels today. Marcus Stroman bounced back from a rough start to pitch very well and I think Liriano will keep it rolling today. His turn to face Mike Trout and his bunch of misfits and I think he will get the job done.
Pick: Blue Jays
Dodgers (Ryu) vs Giants (Cain)
Before the start of the season many experts expected these two teams to make the playoffs. They sure aren’t playing like it right now. Both teams look to get on track as they face off in a four game series in San Francisco. The Dodgers are in better shape than the Giants right now and Matt Cain is right handed so I am picking the Dodgers to win.
