Yesterday's Picks: 11-4
Monthly Picks: 142-123
Yearly Picks: 142-123
Cubs (Lackey) vs Reds (Arroyo)
This is actually a tough matchup for me to pick. I don’t like either one of these pitchers. Arroyo is washed up and Lackey is….. well John Lackey. Neither one of these pitchers has been all that effective this year so I think there will be quite a few runs in this game. I think that the Reds will score more and snap the Cubs four game winning streak. Yes I am picking Bronson Arroyo to win.
Astros (Musgrove) vs Rays (Andreise)
The Rays now have 10 guys on the disabled list and no left hander in their bullpen. Despite all of that they are going for the series win against the Astros today. I don’t really know how the Rays are winning games. They strike out a lot and play horrible defense but they always seem to find a way. I think today will be no different and they win the series against the Astros.
Red Sox (Rodriguez) vs Orioles (Gausman)
I was one of the people who had high hopes for Kevin Gausman coming into the year. He is proving those hopes were misplaced as he has not pitched like I thought he would. Now he faces the Red Sox offense. I want no part of him today.
Pick: Red Sox
Braves (Foltynewicz) vs Phillies (Eflin)
Zach Eflin takes the ball for the Phillies trying to lead them to a sweep of the Atlanta Braves today. In his only other start against the Brave Eflin threw a complete game and allowed only one run. I like this kid and I like the chances for the Phillies to get the sweep.
Yankees (Montgomery) vs Pirates (Nova)
I have gotten both of these games wrong in this series with each team winning one when I predicted them to lose. Now the Pirates hand the ball to former Yankee pitcher Ivan Nova. Nova won’t recognize a lot of the Yankee hitters as they have almost a completely different lineup from last year. That also means they won’t recognize his stuff either. For me that is advantage Nova.
Indians (Salazar) vs White Sox (Holland)
Back to back shutouts for the Cleveland Indians. Maybe pitching is contagious. Now it’s Danny Salazar’s turn to take a shot at the Pale Hose. Will he throw the Indians third straight shutout? No. Will he throw well enough for the Indians to win the game and sweep the series? Yes.
Cardinals (Leake) vs Brewers (Nelson)
The Cardinals have been playing better the last week and today they go for their second straight series win when they face the Brewers. They give the ball to Mike Leake, who has been their best pitcher so far this season. I think Leake keeps up his strong performance and the Cardinals do take the series against the Brewers.
Tigers (Fulmer) vs Twins (Gibson)
After these two teams got into a dustup yesterday I am excited to see what they do for an encore. For what it’s worth I am on the Tigers side here. Your teammate gets hit in the face. You retaliate. There was no head hunting by Boyd yesterday against Sano. He just threw it behind his ass. Sano had to know it was coming and he overreacted in my opinion. Oh yeah, in the baseball game today the Tigers win.
Royals (Hammel) vs Rangers (Darvish)
The Texas Rangers are another team that is going for a sweep as they send their ace to the mound against the Royals. Yu Darvish against the worst offense in the American League? Sign me up! Rangers get the sweep.
Giants (Samardzija) vs Rockies (Freeland)
The Giants are reeling right now and they hand the ball to Jeff Samardzija at Coors Field today. That is not exactly confidence inspiring. Kyle Freeland hasn’t pitched great this year but he hasn’t had too. The Rockies bats are hot right now and I do not expect that to change. I like the Rockies in this one.
Blue Jays (Stroman) vs Angels (Wright)
After that disastrous performance against the Red Sox, Marcus Stroman now gets to face a much easier foe in the Los Angeles Angels. Stroman will bounce back for the Blue Jays and he will lead them to their first series win of 2017. Pretty sad that it is coming almost a month into the season but here we are.
Pick: Blue Jays
Mariners (Gallardo) vs Athletics (Triggs)
Just when I think the Mariners are starting to turn it around they come out and lose three in a row to the Athletics. Now they once again find themselves in the American League West basement and are just trying not to get swept today. Their biggest issue right now is that they are 1-9 on the road. That is about to be 1-10 as Gallardo loses and the Mariners get swept.
Dodgers (McCarthy) vs Diamondbacks (Miller)
The Diamondbacks are 8-1 at home and now hand the ball to Shelby Miller looking to sweep aside the Dodgers. They are doing it behind the best offense in all of baseball as they lead the Majors with 103 runs scored. Unfortunately for Arizona Shelby Miller is not left handed. I think the Dodgers salvage a game in this series. It won’t be a high scoring game but the Dodgers will come out on top.
Marlins (Koehler) vs Padres (Perdomo)
Games like this are the reason why picking every game is such a grind. If I wasn’t doing this than I wouldn’t even give this game a second glance. The Padres and Marlins are playing and they both have below average starting pitchers going. At least one has some talent on offense. That is why I am going with the Marlins to win.
Nationals (Scherzer) vs Mets (Wheeler)
The Nationals are pitching like everyone thought they would this year, which is really good. The Mets are struggling to hit the ball. That is not a good formula when you are facing Max Scherzer. The Nationals win their seventh straight today as they make Wheeler work and Scherzer breezes through the Mets lineup.
