April Today (19th), 2017 Picks:

Pirates (Cole) vs Cardinals (Wacha)

The Cardinals are going for a sweep today against a Pirates team that is now without starting center fielder Starling Marte for the next 80 games. That is a huge blow to the Pirates. There is a reason why they moved McCutchen from center field to right field this year and now he is right back in the middle of that outfield. I think the Cardinals get the sweep today as the Pirates are still reeling from the suspension.
Pick: Cardinals

Brewers (Milone) vs Cubs (Hendricks)

The Cubs snapped a four game losing streak yesterday and finally got their bats going a in scoring nine runs. If you had told me before the season started that Jason Heyward would be leading the team in batting after two weeks I would say you are nuts. But that is why you got to love baseball. I think Heyward stays hot and a couple other Cubs bats get going and they get the win again.
Pick: Cubs

Rangers (Perez) vs Athletics (Hahn)

Martin Perez has already faced this Athletics lineup once this year and he allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings in getting the win. The Rangers are a confusing team to me. They have good pieces but they are not putting it together right now. Thankfully for them they are in the AL West which will be topsy-turvy all season long. I do think they win today and win the series against Oakland.
Pick: Rangers

Marlins (Volquez) vs Mariners (Hernandez)

Felix Hernandez has changed himself once again as a pitcher. He no longer cares about the strikeout. He just doesn’t want to walk anyone. The second part is key after he had the highest walk rate of his career last year. So far so good this year as he has yet to issue a walk. I do think he will issue one today but he will still get the win as the Mariners win this getaway day game against the Marlins.
Pick: Mariners

White Sox (Covey) vs Yankees (Tanaka)

The Yankees finally lost at home yesterday after winning their first seven games in the friendly confines of Yankee Stadium. Now they hand the ball to their ace to try to win another series. Masahiro Tanaka has not pitched like an ace this year, but he will today as the Yankees win again.
Pick: Yankees

Red Sox (Porcello) vs Blue Jays (Liriano)

Well the Red Sox proved me wrong about Marcus Stroman yesterday. They really got the bats going and beat the living hell out of him. They look to stay hot against Francisco Liriano and I think they will. I like the Red Sox to win this game. The Blue Jays need to get good hitting and good pitching in the same day. That hasn’t happened yet and won’t happen today either.
Pick: Red Sox

Orioles (Jimenez) vs Reds (Garrett)

Bronson Arroyo didn’t even need to pitch very well yesterday because the Reds lit up Kevin Gausman like a sparkler on the Fourth of July. Runs came early and often yesterday and I think the bats stay hot against Jimenez. I see Joey Votto hitting another home run and the Reds scoring at least five off of the Orioles starter in winning again.
Pick: Reds

Phillies (Velasquez) vs Mets (Gsellman)

Both of these pitchers have an ERA over 9 coming into this start. The Phillies are 6-14 in their last 20 games against the Mets, and haven’t won a series against their NL East rivals in over a year. I think that streak will continue as the Mets win a high scoring affair. They will get a lead early and then hold on close as the bullpen scares them but does enough to get the win.
Pick: Mets

Tigers (Zimmermann) vs Rays (Archer)

Before the season Chris Archer was my pick for the American League Cy Young Award. He has done nothing to disappoint or change my mind so far. He looks to pick up his third win of the young season against the Tigers today. The Rays play well at home, and with their ace going they win again today to take the series against the Tigers.
Pick: Rays

Nationals (Ross) vs Braves (Teheran)

The Braves finally lost a game in their new park! After winning the first four games at Sun Trust Field (albeit against the lowly Padres) they finally played a real team and it showed. That being said I do like Teheran and the Braves to win today. Nothing against Joe Ross. Just think he pitches like his name. Kinda boring.
Pick: Braves

Indians (Bauer) vs Twins (Mejia)

I want so badly for Trevor Bauer to succeed. His unusual warmup routines, him injuring himself opening up a drone, the fact that he was talented enough to be the #3 pick in the draft. But my belief in him is fading with each start. I am going to give you one more chance Trevor. Don’t disappoint me!
Pick: Indians

Angels (Ramirez) vs Astros (Keuchel)

Dallas Keuchel must like pitching in odd years. He is the anti San Francisco Giants. In 2015 he won the Cy Young Award and so far this year he has been dominant. He is 2-0 with an ERA under 1 in his first three starts and now he gets to face an Angels team that has Mike Trout, an over the hill Albert Pujols, and honestly not much else. Advantage Astros.
Pick: Astros

Giants (Bumgarner) vs Royals (Vargas)

The last time that Madison Bumgarner pitched in Kansas City he was throwing five shutout innings in relief in game 7 of the World Series in 2014. Now he is back and facing Jason Vargas, who is experiencing a bit of a resurgence so far this year. I can’t believe I am actually doing this but I am going to ride the hot hand and go with Vargas to beat Bumgarner.
Pick: Royals

Rockies (Anderson) vs Dodgers (Kershaw)

Clayton Kershaw has already lost once to the Rockies this year. I can’t see it happening again. I think he dominates today and the Dodgers snap a three game losing streak today. I also think that Corey Seager will bounce back after having six strikeouts in his last two games with three hits today.
Pick: Dodgers

Diamondbacks (Greinke) vs Padres (Chacin)

Jhoulys Chacin goes against another ace today as the Diamondbacks and Padres square off. Clayton Kershaw. Madison Bumgarner. Zack Greinke. That is three of the four pitchers Chacin has pitched against. He actually beat Bumgarner. He won’t beat Greinke. Diamondbacks win.
Pick: Diamondbacks
