April Today (18th), 2017 Picks:
White Sox (Gonzalez) vs Yankees (Severino)
The Yankees won again yesterday to pick up their 8th straight win. They are doing it behind a potent offense that is carrying them. I look for the offense to continue firing on all cylinders today and for the Yankees to pick up #9 in a row.
Boston (Johnson) vs Blue Jays (Stroman)
Marcus Stroman has been the one bright spot for the Toronto Blue Jays so far this year. In his last start he threw a complete game but got the loss, as his teammates couldn’t put a run across for him. Today he will continue to pitch well and his offense will score enough runs to get him the win. I like the Blue Jays to take this one today.
Pick: Blue Jays
Orioles (Gausman) vs Reds (Arroyo)
Bronson Arroyo will not be long for this league if he keeps pitching the way he is currently. He has an ERA of almost 10 and now is facing an offense that does a lot of damage with the long ball. I think the Orioles hit a couple of home runs off of Arroyo and he gets another loss. I also think this will be his last start for the Reds.
Phillies (Elfin) vs Mets (Wheeler)
It is Zach vs Zack as the Phillies and Mets meet for the first team this season. Zack Wheeler is on a hard innings limit of 125 this year after not pitching for the last two years, so obviously the team must be very careful with him. Both of these teams had some tough luck losses this past weekend but I am going with the Zack with the “K” (Wheeler) to get it turned around for his team.
Tigers (Fulmer) vs Rays (Andriese)
Tampa Bay has struck out more than anyone in the Major Leagues this year and today they face a true strikeout pitcher in Michael Fulmer. Fulmer has pitched against the Rays twice in his career and has struck double digit Rays both times. He makes it three for three today as the Tigers win and continue the Rays downward slide.
Nationals (Scherzer) vs Braves (Foltynewicz)
Alright, here is the first loss for the Braves in their new park. After sweeping the Padres in starting 4-0, they now face a real team in the Washington Nationals. Scherzer becomes the first visiting pitcher to get a win at Sun Trust Park and the Nationals get the win.
Brewers (Nelson) vs Cubs (Anderson)
Both of these pitchers have already faced the opposing team once this season and pitched extremely well against them. I think that will continue by both pitchers and it will be a low scoring game. As of right now the Cubs are struggling in close games and I think that trend continues as the Brewers win this one late.
Indians (Tomlin) vs Twins (Hughes)
By all numbers Josh Tomlin might have had the worst start of all Major League pitchers to start the year. He is not the worst pitcher in all of baseball and will turn it around, but with an ERA over 18 he has some major work to do. He gets that ERA lowered today but it will not be enough as Hughes and the Twins even up the series.
Angels (Nolasco) vs Astros (Musgrove)
The Angles are reeling right now and they had the ball to Ricky Nolasco. Normally those would be scary words but he pitches well against the Astros and I look for that to continue today. The Angels break their losing streak at six and snap the Astros five game winning streak in the process.
Giants (Cain) vs Royals (Hammel)
If this game was three years ago it would be the pitching matchup of the day. Alas it is not and both of these pitchers are now on the downside of their respective careers. I think Cain has a little bit more in the tank than Hammel and he will get the win today in a rematch of the 2014 World Series.
Pirate (Kuhl) vs Cardinals (Leake)
All the Cardinals needed was a little bit of home cooking to get back in the win column against the Pirates. Now they are sending the pitcher with the lowest ERA in the National League to the mound in Mike Leake. Leake has been dominant his first two starts and I like him to continue his hot start and lead the Cardinals to their second win a row.
Rangers (Darvish) vs Athletics (Triggs)
The Rangers bats started to get hot yesterday and now they are facing a pitcher who hasn’t allowed a run in his first two starts of the season. I think the Rangers get to Triggs early today and Darvish keeps the Athletics bats down and the Rangers win again.
Marlins (Chen) vs Mariners (Gallardo)
Both of these pitchers have had success against the opposing team in this game. The difference to me is that is back when Yovanni Gallardo was actually a decent pitcher. He isn’t anymore. I think the Marlins snap the Mariners four game winning streak and they chase Gallardo early.
Rockies (Freeland) vs Dodgers (Ryu)
Freeland has already beaten Ryu and the Dodgers once this year. He held the Dodgers to only one run at Coors Field. That is no small task. Yesterday I spoke about the Dodgers struggles against left handed pitching and they proved me right. Kyle Freeland is a left handed pitcher. I think you see the direction I’m heading.
Arizona (Miller) vs Padres (Cosart)
Another chance to jump on the Shelby Miller hype train everyone! In all seriousness he is facing a Padres team that scored eight runs in four games against the Atlanta Braves. If he wants people to think he is back he has to pitch well today. I think he does.
